So much depends on where you live, what type of soil, shade or full sun. Your local Home Depot or Loews can help you find the right product for your location. We always rented a slit seeder when starting a lawn, then a good fertilizer, straw and lots of watering. Lawn should have lime spread once a year to help the grass even more...it sweetens the soil. It takes a lot of work but if you keep at it, it will grow. My husband would add additional seed as necessary each year and of course, weed and grub control.

The starting point is amending the soil. If you haven't already done so, till in topsoil, sand, compost or other organics, if the area is clay, add some iron. Fertilize before tilling not after, then plant grass, the best way is hydroseeding, as it makes for even distribution of seed and mulches at the same time, see the yellow pages.

Not sure where you're at but Fall is the best time. Buy good seed (Rebel or Scotts works). Rough up the dirt and spread the seed. Starter fertilizer is also good. Sun and water is all you need then. Spread some straw over it and it will retain water longer and not get too much sun.
