Believe that they're entitled to have Spanish spoken everywhere they go? Don't expect Americans to speak Spanish as this is America. I used to work at a government agency, and they used to come in, and expect people there to speak Spanish. Like it was an entitlement. It seems like they would hate it when people didn't "espeakay Spaneesh." I can understand for medical care...not for every flipping government service. I don't go to other countries and make demands. Why do Hispanics think they are entitled? Is it because they're becoming the mojority in America?

Yeah, I meant "majority." Umm, you shouldn't always expect perfect spelling on Yahoo Answers. We tend to click submit rather quickly. Hellllloooo, it's Yahoo Answers...not an article.

Because US politicians have convinced them they are entitled...

Hispanics can't make people speak Spanish, businesses give the option to speak Spanish because the business wants to appeal to the Hispanic customers.

English is the hardest language to learn. Look at how many words all of you have misspelled. It does take time. I wouldn't expect anyone to learn any language over night, give people a chance to learn it. I have always taken my interactions with Spanish speaking people as an opportunity to learn Spanish.
I have found that many Hispanics speak English a lot better than they think they do, but have been made to feel that they couldn't, by intolerant Americans.

It seems the US government, our illustrious senators and representatives, think it is best that we accommodate these people, not just Spanish speaking, but ANY foreign language. I know of no other government who provides as much foreign translation as we do. Personally, I do not agree and think it is a waste of my taxpayer dollars to provide multiple language translations. I expect people to learn English, the language the laws of the land are written in. I, too, can see the need in places like hospitals and for other emergency services when time and clear understanding are paramount issues, but for routine business, no. Blame it on Congress...

Have you ever travelled to a foreign country that didn't have English as its official language. If so, did you expect everyone to speak English with and to you, or did you show speak their language?
I agree that Spanish speaking people should atleast attempt to converse in the native tongue of the country they are lving in, but for many who have recently arrived in the US it is difficult to learn English, especially when it is spoken with a thick accent. Try to have a little compassion and show some tolerance to these people who are making you so upset and aggravated. Try to put yourself in thier shoes and imagine what it is like for them to be living in a foreign land with "natives" who aren't very tolerant of foreigners of any persuasion, especially Spanish speaking types. Don't let yourself be consumed by prejudice and intolerance, for it will surely become a heavy load which will eventually bring you down to a level of hatred and spite you yourself won't be too proud of...
Oh, and by the way, people who speak English as thier first language will be the minority in the US in the next 10 years or less. Get used to the idea of being a minority - the time is soon to come...

It's about time you learned another language!

German , at one time, came 1 vote from becoming the official language of the US as there weren't many English speaking people here! And there probably wont be again somewhere down the road!

Kawaii, good thought, but these good people have already cut the budget of programs that teach English as a second language! That is why their non-sensible diatribes mean nothing! If they really wanted them to speak English one would assume that they would not be cutting programs that teach English!

And by the way, ALL people who are granted citizenship MUST be able to read and speak English!

eddie, is that corporate welfare as well who hire illegals?

Let me tell you that I don't agree with your statement that "maybe for medical care". I work in the healthcare field and why should I learn Spanish just so these illegals can be understood. Would they learn to speak English if I were in their country and needed medical treatment? I think not.

Queen Isabella of Spain commissioned Columbus to find India. Then Cortes came to conquer and settle. The Spanish have been here two hundred years longer than the British. Americans have only been here a couple of hundred years, a lot less than every body else. Learn to deal.

By the way, Spanish, Italian, French, German, are all majorities, not english.

I know exactly how you feel, come to think of it, but i've never actually thought about this before...I'm 17 and have been studying spanish for 5 years, so whenever I hear someone speaking spanish, I listen in lol because they would never expect that I also do because I'm a typical american girl. I agree with you...if you come to America from another country, you shouldn't expect people to cater to your language. I'm a little biased because I'm very interested in the language though.

I dont think they expect it. I think that they dont speak english so they have no choice but to communicate in the language they know. It is frustrating for non spanish speaking people, to try to communicate, but its equally frustrating for the spanish speaking citizen. Alot of those people are here legally and they still do not learn the language, I think they try,but they are just not getting it. And alot of english speaking people do go to foreign countries and do not speak that countries native language. It happens all the time. Its just people have no tolerance.

I feel that it is very rude for non Hispanics to judge others that do not know the language. People should be diversed in their thinking than be so close minded. It is a privelege to be more educated in more languages than one. I have traveled and people are more open minded than in the United States.

Yes. It is the height of conceit and rudeness to go to someone else's country and expect them to cater to you.

I am bilingual by the way. But when I go to another country I at least make an attempt to communicate in THEIR language.
