Then the superman will appear. (just a joke)
Okey, Once the Earth stops not rotating, then in between bright and dark, can respectively have a very narrow region, at the same time forever is the daybreak, in addition one side then forever is the dusk. These two regions already cannot too bright, too hot, also cannot too black, too be cold, therefore has become the best inhabited area. but it isn't such simple explaination ...
Earth's auto-rotation rate is each hour 1,700 kilometers, because we live on the Earth, also is revolving with the Earth by each hour 1,700 kilometer speeds, the air also is this.
If the Earth once stopped the rotation, then acts according to the law of inertia, on Earth's all things all cannot stop immediately, but is defers to the original speed continue rotate.
Such speech, on Earth's all things can eject, each hour 1,700 kilometer speeds quite fast more than 400 miles, the such great speed can overcome the earth gravity to throw us to each place or fly to space, except humanity, but also has the building, the big tree, the animal and so on also can eradicate fly to space, in the sea water also can apart, in brief is a confusion.
Also has the air, the air also can crazily blow by each seconds more than 400 meter speeds, must know this the typhoon, the tornado speed also must be bigger than, that scene is unable to imagine.
After this disaster tranquilly gets down, the possible humanity already to become extinct.
Because did not have the rotation, is only left over the revolution, then 1 night is how long? how to measure? It could be a year, it could be a sec! we don't know
And polars, half year is a daytime, half year is a dark night. The Earth possibly to become a dead star, very difficult to reproduce again likes the human like us to find the answer of ''if the world stopped rotating....wot wud happen????! !!? ''.

If the world stopped rotating a day would become a year since the earth still travels around the sun. A lot of places would become unihabitable (mainly around the equator area). People would not fall off because the rotation of the earth does not help us stay fixed to the ground, in fact I think that we would feel the effects of gravity more.

Let's say the world slowly ground to a halt over several days. tsunamis, eartquakes, massive volcanic activity and widespread weather disruption. not a nice time to live through. but gradually the earth might settle down with half the earth in darkness (gradually moving around the earth, as the earth continues to revolve around the sun) massive ice caps will form cutting off the circulation currents of the earth and therefore causing a runaway ice age encompassing the globe. I think the only life able to live would be life that can migrate in tune with the earths orbit around the sun or could tolerate very very cold temperatures for most of the time. Man I think wouldn't last long!

The world rotates at approximately 1,000 miles per hour at the equator. If the globe stopped rotating suddenly then everything would continue to move at that speed until something caused it to stop moving. There would be instant death and destruction on a grand scale. Nevermind the heat and cold theorist most of us won't be around to appreciate our predicament. The best place to be during such an event would be at one of the polar ice caps hunting polar bears. They can keep you warm and they're good eatin.

THINGS WOULD NOT FLY OFF. PEOPLE GET THIS SO WRONG.
Gravity has nothing to do with the spin of the earth. In fact it is the spin that has the tendency to throw you off, though it is much too slow to do so.
Apart from the fact that the weather would be seriously disrupted, nobody mentioned that the spin builds up about 11km of extra bulge at the equator. If the world stopped spinning, the ocean and even the land of that bulge would try to re-distribute. There would be massive tsunami, miles high, and phenomenal earthquakes.

If the earth stopped rotating and still orbitting, then:
(1) Everything flies of due to deceleration as many answers above predicted.
(2) Every place on earth, except the poles, will have 6 months of continuous darkness and 6 months of continuous brightness. (This is contrary to many answers above)
The 2nd point may appear controversal, but you will agree with me if you know the moon, which has one side permanently in the dark , is actually rotates once on itself every month.

If the world stopped rotating, one side of the world will get sunlight, the other side will stay in complete darkness.
The side that is facing towards the sun, will most likely turn into a desert or will dry up and burn.
The other side, will most likely freeze and turn into another Antarctica.
We would most likely die if this happens anyways, unless we adapted very quickly.

Yeah, well that would be bad. One side of the world would be entirely dark forever, which would cause all the plants on that side to die because of no sunlight for photosynthesis, which would cause all animal life on that side to move to the sunlit side or die off. If they moved to the sunlit side, there would instantly be a scarcity of resources, since the same amount of resources that sustained half the world would now be sustaining the entire world.
Not to mention that the non-sunlit side would freeze over and the sunlit side would feel like an oven. Which would change weather patterns.
Good thing Earth is still rotating!

one side of the earth would be pointing towards the sun all the time and would become scorched, the other side would freeze. The only place that would be habitable would be a belt on the edge of both sides a couple of miles wide.
Its also possible that the earths magnetic field would fail and we would all die of radiation poisoning.
Basically all life would die.

Humanity would fight so hard over the coveted sunrise/sunset climate provinces that it would dwindle to 10% of its world population hence all other species that could get by in 24 hour light (savannah world) or darkness (glacier world) would thrive.
