There is a great place just a couple of hours from you. Santa Cruz is a wonderful family vacation, I took my kids there a few times. Not only is it a great beach/college town, but it's an artist colony too. There is a nice downtown with shops and very good restaurants. The kids will love the boardwalk, it's the only one on the westcoast. There is a nice amusement park there with plenty of rides and games to keep them happy for days, in fact two of those rides are National Landmarks. You are close to the Henry Cowell redwood park, and only a two hour drive from the world famous Monterrey Bay. Aquarium. There is the famous "Mystery Spot" and a real steam train ride from the boardwalk to the redwood park. There is a surfing museum and some great little beach towns right next door.
