The planet is heating up and we aren't causing it? No one can say that in good confidence.
But I agree that the reason is politics.

The problem is that "An Inconvenient Truth" is so full of untruths, that people dismiss the whole thing as a pack of lies.
The charts showing CO2 versus temperature over the past 50 years aren't undisputed. The weather satellite data from NASA says the earth hasn't warmed as much as Mr. Gore's charts do.
But even if you assume that global warming is happening, there's little evidence to show that it's caused by mankind.
For instance, we don't have particularly high levels of CO2. The levels were about 20 times as high during the last ice age - which suggests greenhouse gas isn't the whole story.
The earth has warmed and cooled - and not a little - over the past years. A thousand years ago, Greenland was warm enough that there was a thriving farming community, and the UK was warm enough that there were many vineyards. It cooled off, the farmers abandoned Greenland, and the grapes died.
An article in the March 21 issue of the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences says that changes in ocean currents may be responsible for most of the current warming.
Warming oceans spit out huge amounts of CO2. (If you've left a glass of soda pop out, you know what happens to the CO2 in it.) It might be that warming is causing greater levels of CO2, rather than the other way around.
In any case, the basis for science is skepticism. Experiments need to be repeatable for scientists to believe them. The global warming argument isn't backed by science, but by faith - but you know what Mark Twain said about faith, don't you?
"Faith is believing in what you know damned well ain't so".
If people are skeptical, that's good!

The reason some people refuse to believe in global warming is that they have studied Geology. These people (myself included) understand that the Earth's temperature has fluctuated throughout the Earth's history. They (or should I say we) understand that the Earth's temperature has typically been hotter than it is at today, and that the Earth is in a rare period of Global Cooling. Now I know that there are some people that refuse to believe in global warming that are not part of those who have studied Geology, and therefore don't fit into my explanation. Of them, I cannot speak, for I have not heard their arguments.

Some people want to get all wrapped up in politics and argue and point fingers.
The truth is the planet is heating up. The truth is we aren't causing it. Its a natural cycle (though we do produce a lot of CO2 that isn't helping). The truth is its still going to cause a whole helluva lot of problems.
Al Gore and his cronies need to shut their pie holes and start working on real solutions for all the problems we are going to face (like less land to live on, less land to grow on, less clean water to drink, more tropical diseases) instead of nitpicking and playing the blame game to get attention.

Some people still believe the Earth is flat. There will always be a minority who go against the rest of us.
