I mean as in field hockey. what is the trick? I always end up going backwards when i am meaning to go forwards. is there a drill that can help with this skill?

Use the basic grip.
The Indian Dribble is named after the fabulous dribbling technique of the Asian players.
The left hand turns the stick while the right hand guides.
Bring the ball with the hook of the stick from the forehand to the backhand and, using the tip, back again.
Make sure that the stick turns over the ball: across the front of the ball and not behind the ball.
Keep the ball in front of the body and try to look up during dribbling (vision).
