The motivations and intentions for thinking are that you are looking for a solution to something. Maybe someone asked you a question and you want to answer it correctly so you are going to think about it. There are a lot of reasons to think. I think, therefore I am.

Cogito ergo sum... I think...
I know we remember because we are social beings, and need to interact and remember each other to survive, together. Also, because developed, against all odds, to live off the land, and must be able to recall which plants do what, or are good for what. And I think, just like -- at least for me -- your mind changes, once at 18, and so on, ours changed. Just like our technology renders many of our evolutionary powers pretty useless -- with computers, machines, etc, to aid us -- the surplus of cognitive power must have lead to introspection, philosophy, etc. Ultimately, though, thought is useless. The greatest learning, it has been said, is unlearning. So we gain the spiritual or intellectual evolvement through adulthood and strife, and must unlearn our pains and fears, to be happy, more primal -- but refined.

You think only when you need to solve problems or choose to act one way instead of another. Thinking is the same as you free will.
