It'll be a long time before soccer becomes one of the top sports in the US. American football is king right now but a lot of other major sports have been dropping off a bit like hockey, baseball and basketball in the past few years. Soccer in this country is still in its infancy and there is definite room for growth as there are more people than ever playing the game here.
Back in the day there were few youth soccer leagues. Today there are just as many if not more than little league baseball. It's all about starting young, good marketing and a good product. If you can get the kids hooked than it'll keep continuing to grow into something big. MMA is a great example of targeting a specific audience, marketing the sport to perfection and delivering exciting fights. A sport that was non-existant 10 years ago is about to become mainstream. No doubt in my mind that soccer can someday do the same and imo it is slowly but surely on its way.

Doubt very much if it will ever replace grid-iron football or basketball in the minds of Americans or the American media. These sports are ingrained from high school through college and university to the pro ranks, Howewver, I can see the day when soccer will rival ice hockey and even baseball as a major sport in North America. It won't be any time soon but I would say it will happen within the next 15-20 years.

I don't think it will ever be mainstay in the U.S.A. It is in a pecking order I'm sure. Lets see...
1. Football
2. Baseball
3. Basketball
4. Golf
5. Tennis
6. Hockey
7. Soccer- maybe
I'm not a huge fan, but I'm aware that it is the biggest sport in the world. Except for die hard fans, most people didn't even know the Gold cup was today, or who was in it. After flipping through and finding it (on a specialized soccer channel and spanish speaking channel) even though the game was played in Chicago, it still was mostly Mexican fans. I would say it will take a while to get to the big leagues, if ever.

US Soccer is well on the way. There are already plenty of fans - just look at the attendance of Summer European tours and look at attendance when MLS teams play against Europe. All US soccer needs is;
1. Tap in deeper into the Mexican market - Like Blanco/Chicago.
2. Get Hollywood involved with the Beckham hoopla - it will attract more fans like Nicholson did for the Lakers.
3. Give it time. MLS and Team USA will continue to grow and improve.

Yes.....I hope. This generation certainly plays a lot more soccer than the last, as shown by all the soccer moms driving around, so when their kids grow up in 20 or so years I think soccer will have gained some considerable popularity in America. That mls league is growing too, and with beckham, it can't be a bad thing.

Give it 5 years. It's all about he national teams, and our under 20 is one of the best.
Again, I'd say 5-10 years and the USA will be right up there with the other powerhouses of soccer/football. There is too much money to be made in the States for players like Beckham, Shevchenko, and others to turn down.
The USA has it's own group of rising talent plus the money-maker himself, Beckham, turning down Real deals to come play for Los Angeles.
Again, 5-10 years. Soccer is similar to UFC/MMA. Lots of money to be made and lots of fans gaining every day ( or hour by that matter).
Hey, bopoppa if you get Fox Soccer Channel (FSN) it's not in Spanish, rather an English broadcast. Trust me though, soccer is on the rise. I used to give a crap about eh sport a few years ago, now I find myself in love with UEFA and international.
Keep representing USA. You got top 10 in the future. Beat the Argentines on the 28th and the USA is top 10 for sure (nd that's with people barely knowing what soccer is in the States). THink about if football/soccer was the USA main spoirt. They'd make Brazil, Italy, and France look like ametuers.

I have hope that it will. It's slowly starting to get recognition in the US, but not enough. I was watching ESPN one day and they were showing the armwrestling championships..can you believe that?!? They'll show that..but any soccer match they do show (which is very few) is pushed back to espn 2.
Though the coming of Beckham is going to help the sport alot. Everyone knows the name, soccer fan or not. It's a growing sport in our country and we just need to give it time.

Not any time soon which is too bad. It is a fantastic sport. If more americans would give it a decent chance they'd find they like it. I thought it was boring at first too, until one summer I was in a small town in England and had nothing to do but watch the world cup. After 3 or 4 matches I realized what a great game it is. But most americans won't give it that many chances.
