"Manhunter" is actually based on the first Hannibal novel, "Red Dragon", but the movie starred Brian Cox as Hannibal. The films with Anthony Hopkins started with "Silence of The Lambs", which was the 2nd Lector book, and then "Hannibal". The movie "Red Dragon" is a remake of "Manhunter", but with Hopkins as Hannibal.

...although "Manhunter" is the film that introduced the cinematic world to the character of Hannibal 'The Cannibal' Lecktor (as it is spelled in the film), the series of film recognizably began with "Silence of the Lambs", and went from on from there, with Anthony Hopkins being so much associated with the character.
In retrospect, "Manhunter" is a much better film than it's remake, "Red Dragon"; the tension is greater, much more uncomfortable, and the overall film bears a much more obvious overlaying sensual eroticism than "...Dragon" does.
...although not part of the official series, the film still bears definite viewing, especially for Brian Cox's interesting take on the Lecter character, as well as William Peterson's much more disturbed performance as Will Graham. Tom Noonan's version of Francis Dollarhyde is truly monstrous!!!
...this is director Michael Mann at his edgy, stylish best; up there on par with his other films like "Heat", "Thief" and "Collateral"
