Your compressor is probably gone. Sorry to bear bad news...

When the breaker trips, it indicates either a short circuit, or high amperage draw. If the compressor is not running, it could mean that it has opened a circuit due to high heat, or a safety is keeping it from operating. It could be anything from a simple electrical component to a loss of refrigerant charge, a hands on inspection is needed.

There is nothing you as a homeowner can do, you will need to call in a reputable company. When the technician diagnosis the unit, ask him/her to explain what went wrong, and what are the options for repair. Have him/her demonstrate with the test equipment the piece/pieces that are bad.

A compressor change out will only come with a one-year warranty. A new outdoor unit will come with a 3 to 5 year warranty. If your unit is over 18 years old (the serial number will tell the tech), replace the outdoor unit, as it would only last a few years more, anyway, plus the new unit will be more energy efficient.

I have to agree with the two previous answers, the reason your breaker blew is because your compressor went out. Time to call the hvac people. Bad news sux.

Either the compressor took a crap or the capacitor went south. Hopefully it was the capacitor as they are only about $40.
