I have a 1999 Pontiac Grand Am GT and since i bought it i noticed that it changes gears rough. It is an automatic. When it goes from 1st to 2nd theres a small jerk in the car also 2nd to 3rd but not as bad and really you dont feel it after that. Its mainly just 1st to 2nd. Why does it do this? Is it fixable? And would it do any good to change the transmission oil? Thanks!

Being 8 years old yes changing the transmission fluid would be a good thing to do. Would have the screen cleaned to and maybe the belts adjusted.

Automatic tranmissions work off of hydraulic pressure. The pressure is the highest at low speeds (1st to 2nd shift) due to the need of heavier acceleration at those speeds than your need at higher speeds once cruising. considering the age of the vehicle, the internals just wear over time. I would check the trans fluid level along with color. If it is okay , try using a trans additive, similar to fuel additives to the tank, that you pour down the trans dipstick tube. Try a brand called Lubeguard. Their stuff works pretty good and can sometimes clear shifting issues.

Have a shop perform a COMPLETE fluid change, this requires a special pump and change the filter. Works most of the time for curing such problems. Around here the oil change places can do it.

change the fluid and filter and put a quart of lucas trans additive in. It will probably be fine. If you see lots of metal in the pan when you change it then you might not be as lucky

it sounds like you may have a broken trans mount or motor mount. when your trans shifts, it moves your entire engine and trans assembly. take the car in and have it checked.....if no mounts are broken then you may have a worn trans and need to have it rebuilty. check the mounts first though....cheaper
