Most Canister Filters are better than wet-dry filters because they have height-adjustable inlet and customizable outlet system with spray bar to allow this filter to work efficiently on any type of aquarium. Flow control is always above tank level for easy accessibility. Anti-overheating design protects motor if filter gets clogged and is now available in all good brands.

Disposable filtration pouches and filtration baskets with handles allow easy replacement of media.

What sort of wet/dry filter are we talking about, a small one that hangs on the back or we talking about a sump system with several different compartments?
Small hang on the back, is OK but probably limits the turnover of water, so is best suited to a small tank.
Sump, system is probably in my opinion the best way to filter a tank, you have the ability to create a specific filtration system to suit what your keeping you can have any number of filtering mediums in there you can increase or decrease your turnover with a switch.

Canisters for the most part are OK however, the larger the volume of water the more mechanical the system becomes in other words yes it cleans the water but there's insufficient bio filtration benefited from the canister and you end up buying more the one to compensate for this.

If your growing plants I found the flows of both methods could cause some problems however the large volume of water afforded by a large sump helped to balance the water better over a long term.
