They promised it would be out by 2007, and TDK I believe has come up with their disk... does anyone use it? Too expensive? Why is it nowhere in the news?

Two technologies that use the acronym HVD. First one is High-Definition Versatile Disc, the one I think you are referring to. It is used in Asia a lot, but elsewhere has been largely ignored. Very few DVD players will support the format, therefore many people would have to get new players to use it. HD-DVD and Blu-Ray are both better, therefore those are the two new formats that have taken off, leaving HVD behind.

The other is Holographicd Versatile Disc, which I doubt is what you are talking about because it is still a few years away from being mainstream. The are suppose to hold up to almost 4 Terabytes of information. The costs right now are still incredibly high, with players being around $15000, and discs over $100 a piece. You want see those become mainstream until prices become manageable, which will be a while.

VHD was not a great success as a consumer product, but the system sold well for the applications discussed above. VHD has something of a cult following in Japan, and discs and players are both still collected
