I have a leopard gecko, she is about a month old and the pet store said your supposed to use paper towel not substrate for the first few months until they get older. I'm going to take her out in a tiny box and clean her cage. can I put towels (like kitchen towels on the floor of the cage) I don't want to use paper towel because she might get burnt because I have a bottom heater.

When my leo was a baby he got his nails stuck in the reptile carpet. I switched to non-adhesive shelf liner (no glue, which is toxic when heated) and it looks great, easy to clean. Attach your under tank heater to a dimmer switch (sold at hardware stores) so you can adjust the temperature. Use an indoor/outdoor digital thermometer set to "outdoor" and tape the probe to the bottom of the cage over the heated side. It should read 88-91 during the day. NEVER use loose substrate such as caci or any other kind of sand! It is the number one reason we see impactions in lizards--often fatal! It is not natural for pet lizards to be forced to eat off of loose substrate. I'd recommend you also check out www.reptilerooms.com and join in on the forums to ask more questions and get expert answers. I love it!

The best things to use are either paper towels, shelf liner, ceramic tile or slate. All are easy to clean and pose no risk of impaction.Your Leo may get it's nails stuck in the reptile carpet or eat peices of it if it frays.

They can get their toes caught in the loops of the kitchen towel, paper towel is much better. I'm glad to see you aren't using sand for your Leo. : ) Paper towel is much healthier, no matter how old they are.

As long as you have the heater regulated through a thermostat or rheostat of some sort as it should be, it cannot burn her.

For the short period of time that you are cleaning the cage, either a cloth towel or newspaper will be fine.

best to follow what pet store told you, see what care book they might have and get one.
