I've been searching for the right laptop for a couple of months now, and I've been rather attracted to the MacBook (original.) I need to get a wireless connection without a hotspot, but I have cable at home, and my friend has a Dell but his internet is free and wireless. I know Macs come with AirPort... how does it work and what do I need- is it a one time cost? Or do I still need to pay monthly? Help!

MAC's airport comes with the computer and is free. I have a MAC and I love it. Internet wise it is much easier for me. Some sites like Walmart's music program still hasn't gotten MACwise but that is really the only problem I've come across. I use safari and when it isn't accepted I use Moxilla Firefox. I've tried using internet explorer on my MAC laptop and well it's a no go. It doesn't work well. Also we really don't get viruses(*knock on wood). It's really nice to not have to worry about that. Also navigating the different features and setting to my computer were difficult at first but really they are placed in a more logical location than PC's. But anytime their is free wireless internet, it's free. Airport is a free program. Works great. And when you want to save battery time you can turn it off. It is centrally located at the top right of the screen automatically which makes it easier to find and it's easier to see. I still don't know how to pick up the free wireless internet with my mom's Dell laptop.

AirPort is just the name of the WiFi adaptor in the laptops. You still need a wireless network to connect to.

You could create one by connected a wireless router to your cable modem.

I have a MacBook (white) and internet set up was extrmely easy to go wireless. Just talk to a friend that knows about that stuff and ask him about it. Thats what I did.
