okay...i may be a bit overprotective...but i'm a first time mommy...do you think its safe for a 6 month old to play in the yard? she's only crawling, and will stand holding onto something. i'm just scared about bugs...and okay, i admit it...dirt.

i dont think its ok. there could be fire ants. especially at this time of year and there are bees. you're not being overprotective. its ok to feel that way. let her crawl in the living room. move everything on the side and put a blanket or play mat on the floor and let her crawl around and exercise. outside is too harmful with all the insects, ants, and the sun's rays.

It really depends on your babies skin, my son is fourteen months old can walk and he was playing in the yard the next thing I know he had all of these scratches and welps where the grass had irritated the skin. A six month old I wouldn't recommend it because she could be allergic to grass, and believe me that's the worse thing. My son when I tried to get him dressed for bed he was so itchy and irritated that he just cried and it was horrible. I put some eczema cream on him to help with the itching but it bothered him so bad. Also it depends on where you live just the weekend my husband, infant, and i were visiting my father in law and I stumbled upon two snakes in the yard talk about scary so no more crawling in the yard for my son period. So just use your judgement think about when you use to roll in the yard as a child, if you did that, and remember your skin breaking out and being itchy then I wouldn't recommend it.

I would watch the baby very closely and only let her crawl on grasses areas and only for a short while. Pick her up and take her exploring the wonders of her new world. That would be what I would do. The baby would just have a wonderful time doing that with mommy

If it is your yard, probably o.k.. The different textures are good to explore and exposing her to the yard could help her body to protect itself against outdoor allergens. The contrary could also result. But if you don't want you baby crawling on dirt and grass don't let anyone pressure you too. Also, if baby does get hurt or sick in the yard, you have to deal with her. From one Mommy to another. You will make the right decision for you & yours. :)

Don't worry about it. Dirt and bugs won't hurt your kid. Watch for sharp rocks, glass etc. It's great if kids want to be in the grass or in sand. It helps them to not be stressed by different tactile sensations. My godson had a problem with that and for the longest time wouldn't walk on or put his hands on grass.

Be sure to put sunscreen on her and have a good time!

i am a fist time mother with a 6 month old also!!! i am the same way. we live in georgia with fire ants, i let her get in the grass the other day (she tried to eat it). she had fun but i quickly picked her up. she will tear it down in her walker and i dont mind that, maybe you should try. just watch her feet for any bugs! Good luck!

my son did not like grass at first, i put an old sheet on the lawn. As he grew to like the grass i just kept an eye on him so he did not eat a snail or something (which he did anyway, gross!!!!!) Exposure to nature is great, and kids who are kept in a "bubble", so to speak, have been shown to ahve higher allergy and asthma rates in childhood.

Remember what we said as kids "God made dirt, so dirt won't hurt!"

my kids were about that age when i first let them in the grass, and all of them broke out in a rash the first time. but after that they were always fine.

they have never eaten any bugs, but my oldest ate a leaf..it went right through her.

as far as I've gone is letting my one year old hang out with me, on a blanket, on the grass. I let her feel it and play and touched her feet etc. but that's it!
