I am looking at a 600$ Toshiba Satellite (very tight budget) laptop. This laptop looks exactly and has every same details as my friends Toshiba. The only thing is that his is a 2006 and this is a 2007 and they dont sell his anymore. His has XP home and ran counter Strike Source and other graphic games with NO LAG!(so ppl who don't think this can run games...it can) His laptop and this laptop have 512mb of RAM, 1.86GHz of speed, Celeron M processor, ATI Radeon Xpress 200m graphics, 60GB hard drive but there is only one difference...his lap has XP while this one I want to buy has Vista Home Basic.

Is there anyway that I can switch from the Vista to the XP Home so that it would be able to run the games like my friends?

And is there a way that Toshiba can switch the Vista to XP Home so I dont have to if its not preloaded?

Also would the XP Home work much better with the 512mb than the Vista Home Basic can with 512mb...cause I only know that the XP Home can play the games i want..

Windows XP would be my #1 choice if I was going to stay with 512MB Ram. XP runs well on 512 while Vista does not. I have a Toshiba Satellite with XP Home and 512MB and while it worked fine with 512 I upgraded to 1.5GB and much happier with it, but just me.

The satellites do use shared ram but at least have a dedicated graphics processor from ATI which means you can run games if you aren't pushing the game too hard (no max settings).

Of course Vista is included and you will have to pay for XP so unless you have a copy of XP I would try Vista and hope it is enough if you are on a budget. If Vista isn't happy, get your machine some more ram (not too expensive) and you'll be fine.

well vista hasn't had a service pack, whereas xp has had 2. xp is WAY more stable and has been de-bugged... vista is new and buggy like everyone knows... give it 1 or 2 service packs and itll be great. vista could be seen as a version of xp with a paint job (same file system etc) the laptop should run some games fine, however i would personally shoot for a laptop with 1gb of ram for vista ( memory guzzler) now, you may be able to find a nice laptop with xp on it, perhaps even a refurb for that price. with some great specs, check out tigerdirect.com or newegg.com, they generally have some good deals.

and you could buy a copy of xp and put it on your vista laptop. but that means more $$$.

XP is a helluva lot more stable with driver compatibility.
But if it comes on it...try it out..if you like it...keep it.
