Do you think L/D nurses are pressued by hospital politics
to do "routine" proceddures, even if the situation doesn't warrent it?

Do you think that L/D nurses are given a bad rap. if so is it justified or not?

BTW: I'm not "picking" on nurses just to piss people off, I'm been curious about how they and their patients veiw each other.

Yes I do think that they are pressured: by politics, by business revenue generated, and by policies. I cannot blame them as they would be sticking their necks out on the line to go against superiors and the powers that be.

Yes, I think that most are given a bad rap, though I think it is, by and large, unfair.

I think they do routine procedures because they are just that, routine! When you deliver 100 babies a week you get into a rythem, first put on the monitor, then put in the IV, then check the cervex etc. If you try to change the routine, most nurses are very accomidating. But some will be stubborn, and not want to do things different. i don't think its policy, just personality.

But you don't understand each doctor or practice has a set of standing orders that nurses MUST follow to care for the patient. If you don't follow them you can lose your license or be sued for malpractice. Once a patient is admitted they do the procedures, call the doctor to inform of the status, and give him/her the babies ETA.

The hospital also has a book called the procedure manual that nurses must follow - it lists, on a step by step basis, how each procedure must be done.
