I have a GREAT invention. Has anyone ever patened anything? Are there any trustworthy companies out there?

Get a copyright first. If someone else has the same idea, but they got a copy right and you didn't- guess who is screwed? Then see a patent attorney who will research if your idea is patentable.

Best method to go about this is to contact a patent attorney and ask his/her advice. They are very expensive, but in the long run you will save yourself a lot of headaches.

BTW, do not tell ANYONE, not even your closes friend about your idea. An attorney will sign a non-disclosure agreement with you as will all respectable companies you will eventually submit your idea to.

Good luck!

A story I heard once.

An employee walks up to a coworker
He displayed a blank piece of paper held in his hand.
He says "I'm going to show you a demonstration now."
"I have a secret" then he puts a 1 on the piece of paper,
"Now I'm going to tell you the secret" and places another number 1 on the paper,
"Later we are going to go down the hall and tell our friend Bob the secret" and places a third 1 on the piece of paper,
He holds up the piece of paper and proclaims "Look at that! Now 111 (one hundred and eleven) people know the secret!"
