no he can't.. if you are down to just a king then you will either lose or tie. You cannot win with just a king left. All end games must finish with a checkmate or stalemate.

People don't realize that the way you win the game is to take the opponant's king. However, the actual move of taking the king is not necessary. You only need to announce "checkmate" if you put the king in check and made so there are no more moves to make.

No, you can only win by checkmating the opposing king, outside of some specific tournament rules. While there is a benefit for pawns reaching the end of the board (promotion) there is no inheirent benefit for the king doing so.

No, you can only win by checkmating the king; however, it helps if you get your pawns to the other side because you can change them to whatever piece you want--except for king. Or you can keep the pawn a pawn, but that's really no fun and few people do that.
