Yes, I've waited tables in the past. Just how rude or inept does a server have to be for you to not tip at all? Examples? Would you ask for a manager or just be nice and let it go?

ok. I have waited tables since i started my first job. There is a fine line of when you should not tip. Sometimes waiters are having difficulty with cusomers at another table. Sometimes there are issues with the food in the kitchen. Unless a waiter is outright rude, or for example, youve needed something for ten minutes and you can see them up flirting with the bartender, then you should always tip at least 10 percent. Remember that servers only make 2.13$ an hour,( in Texas, and comprable amounts in other states) and its not fair if one bad table ruins the whole night because they kept you from your other tables.15% is for adequate service, and 20% is for amazing service. Remember one more thing, youre compliments dont pay bills, so dont tell a server they were amazing and then leave them 10%.

I always tip, no matter how horrible the service. However, I tip strategically. I will leave a tip about how to give better service on a piece of paper along with a quarter or a dollar. I generally leave 20% unless the waiter is clueless though. Leaving nothing sends less of a message than leaving a quarter.

Tocker,

ALWAYS tip.

If the service is that bad, tip the minimum (15%) and talk to the manager.

Tips are shared with the entire staff. Also, if the food is bad, it isn't the waitresses fault.

I was at a restaurant in Texas. My waiter was borderline nasty (his personality). My steak came back well done, not medium as I requested.

Dude apologized and gave me my entire meal for free.

His tip was the cost of my meal.

Well my family always leaves a tip. Except when this one girl rolled her eyes when my farther asked for a refill and then when she came back she slammed it on the table then said "IS THAT GOING TO BE ALL??" She screamed though. Then we left a penny and ran for it. I would probably just let it slide but never go back there again unless I like that place. Then I would go back, and if I get her and she does the same thing then you know it wasn't just a bad day. That’s when you ask for the manager!!!

You should always seek to understand. Always tip if the server at least made an effort. Not tipping or leaving a bad tip doesn't teach the server anything but that you are a bad tipper!

be nice and let it go. if he said something wrong then yes ask for manager but most of the times just let it go. it would be bad customer service if the waiter didn't go to your table after bringing the food. if the waiter never went back to ask if we needed something or anything and we had to call him instead of him coming over to check on us, butother than that just let it go if he/she doesn't do that good..its his loss at a good tip, he or she will learn from the mistakes, right?

Actually, if they're REALLY bad, the best way to get the message across is leave a quarter (or nickel, or two cents, or something like that). Otherwise they might just think you forgot.

However, I usually try to cut them some slack. Maybe they're new - or having a bad day - or have another customer who's running them ragged... I used to waitress and it's a TOUGH job. My hat's off to anyone who can do it and do it well. Unless my waitperson is absolutely RUDE to me personally, I usually leave at least 15% no matter how bad they are. When they're good, they get 20% (or more if it's a cheap meal).

Being ignored is the worst thing! Getting my order all wrong and not offer to fix it. If the waiter is rude I will complain. But this all rarely happens so always tip.

this rarely happens to me. i can only think of one time where the service was so bad, due to the waiter that i did not leave a tip. i think the majority of waiters know they are working for tips verses hourly wages and that unless they are having a really bad time, they are always entitled to at least a 20%+ tip.
