the house is real and the mass murder was real too. the family that moved in their after the murders claimed the house was haunted and so the movie was based on a true story. but years later a few people came out and said that the family and the family attorney made the haunting story up to make money. obviously it cant be proven either way.

Ammityville does exist.
There were murders commited by a Mr. DeFreo while he was in a drug-induced state.
The story about ghosts and hauntings did not. It was a tall tale that the Lutz family came up with when they discovered that they had bought a house they could not afford. The tale snowballed with each retelling, culminating in a publisher slapping a "based on a true story" label to increase sales.

Actually the movie and the story that we are familiar with was exagerated by the author who wanted to make a buck off of the weird situation. The people who were living there have said that there was a problem in the house and that they were preasured to go along with the hoax perpetrated by the author because they were afraid his book would make them look like they were trying to make the whole thing up.

yes there really is a house in that town but the son killed the whole family when he was high on drugs. Hollywood just made the rest up.

The DeFeo murders are true. The rest of it is a hoax that spiraled out of control. When the Lutz's found out they could profit from it, all sort of tales started spinning.

The movie is supposed to be based on a true story. However, I've heard that the people who claimed to have experienced stuff made it all up.

no. it was all made up. The author came out after the movies were such a big hit, and admitted it was fake. Good story though.

it is there, but you're not allowed to go near or in the house because of its history. there was a real murder in that house, and a real interaction with evil beings. unfortunately George Lutz, the man whose family the movies are based on died a few years ago, taking the actual accounts of his family's stay with him to the grave.
