Diesel will definately get you more MPG. Find out if the diesel in your area is cheaper than regular gasoline though. If not, just get a high MPG vehicle.

I'm not sure there is much difference anymore. Diesel is always slightly more expensive and turbos don't really help with fuel economy. It all depends how you drive. If you are quite a fast driver you may be flooring a diesel much more than a petrol engine, especially at junctions and such. You can't beat careful driving with a small engined car! I think the hybrid/LPG ideas a are good, but if it's only town driving what about a bike? Either human powered or petrol powered!

If you do so much town driving perhaps you should look into LPG.
I got my first diesel last year and the savings on a run are phenomenal, around town not a massive difference to petrol.

Diesel.
You should get better economy, but that's only part of the story. Diesels usually have maximum torque (and more of it than petrols) much lower down the rev range. This means they pull much better without having to rev the engine so much, so you can use a higher gear. This makes for more relaxed driving.
Also, diesels are of much sturdier constuction than petrols, to cope with the higher compression ratio. Coupled with the fact that diesel acts as a lubricant (unlike petrol), diesels are capable of much higher mileages.

You won't notice much difference town driving. So buy a diesel. Then when you do a long journey you *will* notice the difference.

petrol and diesel are very similar economically on town driving, although it does depend on engine size, type of car etc
