find the least common denominator between the two fractions

the least common denominator between 4 and 10 is 20 since 4(5)=20 and 2(10)=20.

so you multiply both the numerator and the denominator like so:

3(5)/4(5) + 1(2)/2(10)

so it'll equal

15/20 + 2/20

now you can add.

15/20 + 2/20 = 17/20

You find a common denominator between the two denominators (for 4 and 10 the common denominator would be 20) the common denominator is a number that both denominators can be divided into equally)
What ever number you need to multiply the denominator by to get the common denominator you multiply the numerator by (for 3/4 you multiply 4 by 5 to get 20, so you also multipy 3 by 5 to get 15, for 1/10 you would use 2 (2x10=20, 1x2=2)
now you have two fractions with the same denominator 15/20 +2/20 and you add the numerators together (17/20)
A final step would be to reduce both the numerator and the denominator (for example 18/20 could be reduced to 9/10) but 17 does not reduce so the final answer is 17/20...

1) First find the lowest common multiple of both 4 and 10 (denominators).i.e 20

2) Then find out how many times each of the denominators can go into the multiple...4 can go into 20 "5" times and 10 can go into 20 "2" times.

3) Now multiply each of the numerators (3 and 1) by the answers above...respectively
so; 5*3=15 and 2*1=2.

4) So now you will end up with 15/20+2/20.

5) Add the numerators (15 and 2) now...=17

6) Your answer would be over 20 (common denominators)
answer =17/20

...and that's it.

You must first determine the common denominator for all the fractions.

3/4=15/20
1/10=2/20
Total=17/20
This cannot be reduced further but do so when you can.
Example:16/20 can be reduced to 4/5.

convert to a common denominator and add:

3/4 =30/40 1/10=4/40 30/40 + 4/40= 34/40 reduce denominator until you can't reduce any more
34/40 = 17/20
