Forgive my bluntness but you clearly have no idea of just how far the 'outskirts' stretch - a good 10-15 miles in any direction from the very centre. that's probably about a 100 mile circumference you're looking at - you'll spend more in petrol driving to somewhere free, that you'd spend in parking at the nearest convenient point.
it all depends on where you are visiting London from and how far you're prepared to drive.for example, to get from where I live near South London, to get to North London to park somewhere for free - you're looking at about a 2-3 hour drive, plus probably a toll road to get over the river.
Just accept that you may need to get on a train and then a tube, and park accordingly.
