This is often thought of as the body's attempt to get more oxygen. Yawning fills the lungs to capacity at a time when your breathing rates are at their lowest--before sleeping, when you're exhausted!

I have a book that answers random questions and apparently it's because of our instincts from when we were in a pack or a tribe. You yawn and then instinctively someone will do it back. It's a form of communication. Obviously, it doesn't mean much more now apart from our brains need more oxygen (this happens when we are tired because our breath becomes more shallow as the lungs are calming down) but at one point when we were cavemen it could have meant 'im fine' or something.

Someone asked a similar question earlier today:

BTW, if we yawn just to get extra oxygen, then why don't we yawn when we exercise? Often exercise stops people from yawning.

We yawn because we need additional oxygen. The rest is probably a reaction caused by the subconscious or just a remnant of a forgotten instinct or just the power of suggestion.

We yawn when other people do because...
When you yawn ur body is basically getting itself extra oxygen or replenishing lost oxygen. When we hear other people yawning, our bodies think the other person is taking our oxygen away, so we yawn.... Make sense???

its true. I have sleep apnea and my doc told me that yawning is a sign that your body is lacking in oxygen.
