In 1997, the NBA released its list of its 10 greatest coaches. Here's the list...

Red Auerbach - Boston Celtics of the 60's
Chuck Daly - Bad Boy Detroit Pistons of the late 80s
Bill Fitch - Almost 950 wins in a 22 year coaching career.
Red Holzman - New York Knicks of the early 70s
Phil Jackson - Jordan's Bulls and the Shaq & Kobe Lakers
John Kundla - Minneapolis Lakers coach (1950s)
Don Nelson - 6th winningest coach in NBA history
Jack Ramsey - 7th winningest coach; led the 77 Trail Blazers to the title
Pat Riely - Coached the 80s Lakers, the 90s Knicks, and the 2000 Heat; 5 time NBA Champion
Lenny Wilkens - Winningest coach in NBA history

I would also personally add the Spurs' Gregg Popovich to the list, but that's just me. As for who's the greatest, I would have to say Mr. Auerbach. He set the standard for future coaches to follow.

Red Aurbach.

Phil Jackson had the undisputed best player of his generation in Michael Jordan out of sheer dumb luck from the Blazer's bad selection of Sam Bowie right before Jordan was taken by the Bulls. In LA, he took the easiest, premade lineup, with the most dominant player in the immediate post-Jordan era (Shaq).

Aurbach made the Celtics. He was to loyal to leave, so he never won a championship with another team. He still works in the organization today. As coach, he made guys what they are, not the other way around (as Phil Jackson sometimes did).

Red Auerbach by light years....he took what essentially was a Celtics franchise that was an afterthought to Bruins hockey & built it into one of the greatest dynasty's ever in pro sports.

Red Auerbach. Thanks for the two points.

Phil Jackson is good, but I mean he had Jordan, the guy was a beast, then he had Shaq and Kobe. Put any good coach in that position and they would have that many championships too.

Don Nelson. Think Nelly Ball.

Phil Jackson was a product of his talent. I could have won 18 titles coaching the teams he had. Phil Jackson = Overrated.
