I've trained myself not to apply salt or pepper when dining out because it can be perceived as an affront to the chef. If I am offered fresh ground black pepper for my salad, I will usually accept. At home, I may taste the food while I am cooking to adjust seasoning, but never after.

I rarely use pepper at table, though I do have some there.
Because I cook all my own food, Im pretty aware of how salty it is when it arrives on my plate, but some things take a bit of extra salt at table - after tasting.
BTW, I don't have to taste corn on the cob to know I will want salt on it.

Well, for me it is more like, "do you taste your salt and pepper before you apply the food?"

I salt and pepper my food as I cook to my liking-
If I did not cook the food I do taste it then alter it as needed
I don't use black pepper much though it does not digest red pepper is better for you :)
