... when you're about 18 and you've followed that advice they say "Grow up"?

i think what people mean when they say not to grow up too quickly or to remember the joys of childhood, they do not mean it literally. those sentiments mean to remember the "joy" of childhood not to forget how to "play" & have fun, to be nonjudgmental, as children typically are.

when we tell someone to "grow up" it means to be responsible -- to take care of the things that you are expected to in an adult way, not expecting mommy to do it for you. this doesn't mean we adults can't have fun, play once in a while & roll with changes.

there is a big difference between being "child-like" and "childish."

A child needs to live a secure and happy childhood. The better the childhood the stronger that persons backbone or spirit when it comes to dealing with life in general in his own adult years and when raising his/her own children... which is the natural progression ( once over 18 you may go on to be a parent yourself and continue the never ending cycle called life).

Confusing isn't it? Eighteen the time to start aquiring a bit of adult like responsibility- hopefully not too much at once though, because it's still time to have fun! Gradually in life you become more and more adult until you reach a point where you can regress and act childlike sometimes, and it becomes cute again kind of like Pee Wee Herman.

There is a difference in maintaining the curiosity, and playfulness of childhood, and being immature. Many people as they get older, and the cares of adulthood take hold of their lives they lose their ability to lighten up and play. they lose the joy of life. Yet there are those who just plain and simple remain immature, take no responsibility, and try to live life care and fancy free so to speak, while others try to clean up the mess behind them.

They want you to charish your childhood because you only get to experience it once. As a child you can get away with a bit more and find enjoyment in the simplist things. When your older what was cute when you're a kid is no longer cute as an adult....

Screw them. Assuming you're like me we've got something special, that they no longer have. Undefeatable optimism, humor, hopefulness. Maybe it scares them, maybe they see our potential and want us to back it down and conform to the rest of the world. Don't listen to them, keep your youth. It's the only thing that will seperate you from those cranky old people you used to complain about. Just ask yourself what kind of person you want to be? The 9 to 5er that follows all the rules and sits safely in their cubicle until they retire, or the person who takes risks, shakes things up, and actually moves ahead in the world? It's all up to you.

Once you are 18 you are ready to go into the real world and need to behave like an adult. Although You don't ever want to forget your memories of what got you to where you are now.

Advice: People just like to control other people's life. Do whatever you want to do in a rightful way without hurting others. and think about you and what is what you want to do in your life.

Good Luck!

Actually it is good to have the heart of a child like Jesus said but it ain't good to be childish. Child-like or heart of a child is to be innocent and gentle and not be mean.

Childish is to always say "ARE WE THERE YET?" or to make fun of people. Being child-like can help you to feel perfect peace and limitless happiness which is your birth right. See site below. A good example of being child-lilke is BORAT, the funniest movie ever.

It is called nostalgia when they see someone young and the frustration when they see someone acting childish when they look of age and no longer like a child.
