David Blaine creates illusions, it shouldn't matter how he does them, only that they are entertaining.
If you want to study magical effects you can buy books with them in, but I would suggest only do so if you intend to practise, practise, practise and then entertain people.
The books wouldn't be worth buying just to learn secrets, but they could help you show your own illusions.
Regarding none of his tricks being original, his presentation of the effects are original so the illusion he creates are often original to him.

They are just illusions, not real magic. He sends subliminal messages out to his assistants, however, on some occasions, he does use actors, or imform the participants before he does the "trick".
