I was comparing labels, it seems I get a better dose of most vitamins and minerals continuing my multivitamin. Of course I would make sure to get enough of the real essentials like folic acid etc. But do any of you know if the switch is truly recommended? Like maybe having fewer doses of some is actually better?
And while I'm here, does anyone know if specialized prenatals are recommended? I found a brand that sells specific to trimester like no vit A in the 1st bc of its negative effects and then it adds it during the second, and no iron in the first bc of morning sickness (which I'm too early to have), but adds it again in the second trimester set? Thanks!

It's best to switch to prenatal vitamins, some multivitamins have herbs and minerals that may have not been tested on the fetus.. So, it's best to make the switch... Also, if the prenatal vitamins make you nausea's try taking them at night w/ some crackers and you will absorb more vitamins rather than pee it away during the day..... Plus, prenatal vitamins have the proper dosages of folic acid that you and the fetus needs as well. Reg. prenantals are just fine.. I wouldn't get anything too special.. I like the GNC brand prenatals and if you breastfeed you'll want to continue to take prenatals.. Hope this helps and good luck

Hi, you should always check with your doctor when it comes to pregnancy, but I would say that a multivitamin is not the same. It is easier to just take one prenatal vitamin than to have to supplement extra with your reguler vitamin. Strong vitamins can increase nausea when pregnant, so one is easier to take. Prenatal vitamins usually have way more folic acid and now some of them come with DHA and ARA in them for brain and eye developement. I've never heard of vitamins for each trimester, but I do know that different people are prone to morning sickness, if you are going to be sick, you will, vitamins don't change that. Morning sickness is just an extra sign that your baby is healthy.

I have never taken Multivitamins and only ever take Prenatal vitamins when trying to conceive and whilst i am pregnant.... as long as your doctor says its ok there is not need to worry, and if you are taking folic acid then all is good

I personally couldnt handle the prenatal vitamins. The iron content was too high in them and i just ended up throwing them up. I took a folic acid pill and Centrum in the morning after i ate and so far my baby is doing exceptionally well!! There really isnt a difference in prenatals. Just the name.

What I would do is ask your OB dr. which brand they perfer. I was unable to take most prenatal vitmains. so my OB dr. said that I could take Flintstones vitamins.

I wouldnt take a multivitamin because there can be different mineral or vitamins that can harm the baby if you get to much in your body.

Best thing to do CALL the Doctor.

a multi vitamin has vitamin a in it, you should avaoid this in pregnancy, this is why you are told to avoid eating offal because it has high levels of this. a prenatal supplement is designed to give you the right amount of vitamins that you need both for you and your baby. ask you health professional for more advice.
