I thought it should be fine to hem my skirt with fabric glue. I applied the absolute minimum amount of glue in small dots, but it soaked through to the right side of the skirt, and dried as very visible dark spots. Shouldn't it be thicker and not soak through and ruin the way the fabric looks? Is this normal or should I return it to the store and try a new one?

Return the glue, not the skirt!

This happened to me and I ruined a pair of trousers. It depends on the type of fabric the skirt is made of. It does say on the bottle to test 1st, but I thought it would be ok! Unfortunately not! Looks like you will just have to buy another skirt.

Fabric glue was never intended for hemming -- unless they've made a kind I've never heard of and you apparently didn't get. You can buy hemming tape. That requires an iron, of course. It's not permanent, but will last for a few months. Then you'd need to redo it.
The alltime best way to hem is with a needle and thread. Honest. It may feel tedious (be sure you never confuse the words "difficult" and "tedious") but will really not take any more time than trying to hem a "quick" way and then having to fix it.
Get a needle and some thread as close to the color of your skirt as you can. I like to have a magnet handy in case I drop my needle, but it's not necessary. Thread the needle and tie a knot. Carefully sew through both layers of fabric and hem your skirt. Feel free to email me for more details if you need them. Click on the name under my avatar for an email link.

I think you have answered you own question.
Your experiment sounds like it wasnt sucessfull.
The reason why you test the fabric first is to see if it goes through and in you case it did and it it is normal sometimes for this to hapen.
You shouldnt return it to the store either unless you want to suffer from a guilty conscience afterwards?!
Consider taking it to an alteration shop to get it shortened if suitable or buy a new one and again take it somewhere to be altered.

Spread the glue all over the skirt then it will all be the same colour or alternatively buy a shorter skirt.

its not meant to glue your clothing, but to glue fabric to other items. use fusable hem tape if you are too lazy to sew a hem.

technically you -should- be able to, but it almost always ends up like that! fusible interfacing is pretty good, but doesn't always last for something that gets heavy use. in a pinch, double-sided adhesives work, too. and there's always the theater solution: duct tape, lol :) good luck!

Even if it didn't show through, it will always look stuck to itself. It's just not a good technique.
