Hot dogs and most lunch meats contain a bacteria called nitrate which can be harmful to unborn children. If you eat salami make sure it has been heated to kill the bacteria. If eating hot dogs, make sure to cook completely, maybe even overcook. Salami and hot dogs in moderation if cooked/heated properly is fine but dont make a big habbit of being addicted to them :) Good luck!

RE:
Can you eat hotdogs or salami if your pregnant?
I'm 4.5 months pregnant and have been avoiding foods like hotdogs and salami as the doctors tell you to stay away from foods like that. If I go to a bbq and have an occasional hotdog or an occasional salami sandwich will it harm my unborn?

I've also found books and doctor's opinions on not to eat hotdogs. Hotdogs are made from the scrapings of whatever meat, like butt, fat, etc.
I love salami too. As long as you stay away from Oscar Meyer or other packaged lunch meet, it's ok. As for hotdogs I'm not 100% sure. I did call my pregnacy support doctors office this morning, she told me as long as I don't have high blood pressure and not at a high risk pregnancy that having turkey bacon is ok. Does that help?

The doctors tell you not to smoke, drink, eat a lot of differernt foods... and they are absolute about it.. at least in America. That is because they are affraid that people will go over board and instead of having one glass of wine a week, they'd have an entire bottle in one day... junk food that is high in fat and is questionably manufactured like salami and hotdogs are just not suggested. If you eat them everyday it'll make you sick and might harm the baby... once in a while isn't going to hurt anything. Besides... doctors change there mind as their research funds are changed from one food producing company to another... by the time you have your next child they will say something completely different than what they are telling you now... that's happened to me.

Occasionally, it's not a problem but both of those need to be reheated until steaming.
If you can find salami or hotdogs without nitrates, it would be even better.

I have a friend who is about 5 months pregnant and was also worried about eating hot dogs and lunch meats because of the nitrates. She researched it a bit and found that you can still eat them once in a while but should generally avoid them. If you go to a bbq I think you're fine to have a hot dog or 2. :o)

As long as the hotdogs are cooked thoroughly you should be fine. Try to stay away from the salami though - cold cuts can be contaminated with bacteria and could make you really sick.

An occasional hot dog or salami sandwich won't harm you or baby--but there are so many preservatives in these types of foods (also pepperoni, bologna, sausage, most lunch meats...). It is not good to be eating them often. It is not great for you, either, as these foods are 'empty-calorie' foods = no nutritional value, but fat, cholesterol and preservatives.
I hope the second half of your pregnancy goes well for you, and wish you as pain-free a birth as possible. :)

Honestly no but it is mainly because of the bacteria that can harbor in them called Listeria. Listeria can appear 12 hours to 30 days after eating bad food to include Deli meats, unpasterized milk and cheese and undercooked meat and fish.
My doctor stated that I could eat them as long as they were fresh and basic meats and cheeses to include hot dogs and salami and not imported meats or cheese. She told me to be careful and not indulge too often. I atet hem with my first pregnancy and was never told not to so it was news to me to hear I needed to be careful with this one. She waS very adament about not eating at stands or carnivals though
