as private as that royal family can be, how do you know he hasn't been punished? You assume a great deal.

Let's look at the actual facts on this situation before we cast blame on anyone. When Charles was a very young man he met Camilla and they fell in love. Neither was attached to any other person. Charles approached his mother with the relationship, proclaimed his love for this girl, requested to marry her and was promptly told NO! She was not quite up to the Queens standards. Charles was sent into miliatry service and Carmilla was married off to Parker- Bowes. The two never stopped comunications. They never fell out of love. Both did their best to follow the rules but unfortunately their love for each other remained stronger than any sense of duty. Diana was aware of Camilla's existance when she agreed to marry charles, ( some actually say Camilla chose her). Diana was very young and quite nieve, she surely believed Charles would be able to give her up....or at least be the soul of descretion. ( Adultry within the monarchy has always been an accepted practice). Charles and Carmilla found it impossible to stay away from each other for any substancial period of time, I think they did a hell of a job hiding. As she matured, and became a more hunhappy woman Diana could no longer accept what she had married into. She wanted to experience the same kind of love for her self. After all she deserved that as well. She was also unfaithful to her marriage. Hense the seperation and divorce. Charles and Carmilla kept their relationship a secret for a great deal of time afterwards. Today they are finally married and together, although she will not have a legal right to be Queen unless her ex-dies. Perhaps if Q.E.II had allowed her son to marry the young girl he loved in his 20"s.......all of this horrible drama could have been avoided, Diana might have had a happy life, the British people might respect their heir to the thrown, and it might be looked on as the true love story their relationship has always been.

It is unfortunately quite common for people to have affairs;they are generally kept quiet.Royal history is filled with such dalliances, and because these people are famous, many of these affairs become known.
The Queen really couldn't understand Camilla's refusal to give Charles up,but she was made to understand that the long-time alliance was non-negotiable.
Diana, once the separation was final, was able to understand Charles' foibles and make peace with him;they were on friendly terms at the time of her death.
It is people who like to dredge up salacious stories, some for a profit, who will not let Diana's memory rest unscathed.

Punished in what way? Jailed? Affairs are not illegal - well, except for women in Muslim countries. Don't you think being convicted in the court of public opinion is enough? Charles is roundly disliked, ridiculed and has lost credibility as a future king. Plus, he is married to Camilla. How much worse can it get for the guy?

Charles was already in a relationship with Camilla before he got engaged to Diana.
He spent the night before his marriage with Camilla.
This is not rumour, this is fact.
He married Diana because she fit the bill.
1. She was young & not over-educated.
2. She was a virgin (no skeletons in the cupboard).
3. She was good-looking
4. She came from a family well known to his family.
5. She was young & fit enough to provide the heir & the spare.
6. He thought he could control her & keep her quietly toeing the line.
7. The public adored her.

Prince Charles should have been punished. I also do not feel that Prince Charles was "in love" with Lady Diana Spencer. The only reason he did was because she is from a noble line and actually had more royalty blood in her than Prince Charles. Even after the marriage Prince Charles was still seeing Camilla which had to be humiliated for Lady Diana.

Prince Charles should never be King. Is this the moral status you want to display as a monarchy?

It is amazing to me how people keep playing the poor Di card. She lied to Charles from the beginning. He tried to make it work, a marriage built on lies fails,no matter what you do. He was and continues to be punished in the press and in the holier than thou members of "polite society". I am not a big fan of either of them, I am just sick of the one-sided questions like this.

How is it against the law exactly to have an affair? It is morally wrong, but not against the law, and even if it was, it would be hard to prosecute Charles with credible evidence.

I enjoyed reading all comments and its wonderful how you all felt about the couple. Its sad to see this happen in monarchies and its not only the British monarchy this has happened.
