I think that my true self is the only one significant and dependable steadying influence in life. The ancient Greek philosophers were right in saying "Know thyself and you will know the secrets of the gods and the universe."
I said "true self" because I want to differentiate between ego which carries some element of pride and narcissism versus "true self''.
We are masters of our own fate and our decisions that arise from our own true selves are what brings us to where we want to be. Hence, the true self is indeed the only steadying influence in life. Once we lose control of our true self, we can only be tossed around at the mercy of winds of change and circumstance.

Knowing this: Life is ephemeral. Yesterday is over and tomorrow is a dream. Today is my magic carpet so I pile it high with books and read, listen to the ocean calling and when I can I walk in the rain to remind my self that I am part of all this magic but I can not yet fly..
If I did not know this magical life was all mine I would be nervous and unsure and trying to fly off buildings..

It is the strong foundation my parents gave me, on which to build my life.
They taught me not to be held back by doubts, but instead to accept challenges, and move through life with confidence.
They showed me by example, that whatever you do, you try not to hurt other people. And that if you fail at something, accept it, or pick yourself up and start all over again.
Theirs is my steadying influence.

This from the Desiderata by Max Ehrmann:
"You are child of the universe no less than the trees and the stars; you have a right to be here. Whether or not it is clear to you, no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should. Therefore be at peace with God, whatever you conceive him to be."

Learning up until the very end, which we still don't know is not the beginning of more learning: to learn and be learned in return. That's tight!
