Its not really important if a fart in space is heard. Especially if it is in your space suit. This answer leads to yet another question, do todays modern day space suits have fart filters? Hmmmmmmmmm......gotta check with NASA....

This is an apparently a serious and highly classified subject within NASA. You can't hear a Fart in space, and as we all know those are the most deadly. Farts can be highly explosive, especially in a high oxygen environment. I've seen classified photos of spacesuits with enormous, gaping holes, where the seat used to be. You'll never find anything like bean burritos, pickled eggs, or beer on the space shuttle menu. They were outlawed following the disastrous blow out on Apollo 13. It was covered up of course. NASA didn't want to admit a 75 cent side of Taco Bell re-fried beans took down a hundred million dollar mission. Also, and since there have been female astronauts, there have been reports of the male astronauts cutting the cheese, and then trying to hold the females head under a space blanket. Everyone thinks its funny as hell, as there's really not much to do up there, but the female astronauts don't appreciate it. There's little they can do about it though, as they're always outnumbered six to one.

It is a pity that all these guys are making a joke out of a perfectly serious question!

According to Newton's Three Laws, There would be an equal and opposite force generated.

;-D If the fart was big enough, it would cause you to bump your head on the capsule ceiling!

Depending on how powerful a fart we are talking about here, I would say you will generate anywhere for 3 to 15 lbs of thrust and will be blasted away from your space capsule never to be retrieved.

You can't hear it because there is no vaccume which means sound waves can't go through because there is no matter. And i think the fart will go back in the way it came out.

It will damage your space suit and you could die. Thats why astronauts are not allowed to eat beans while going to outer space

You aren't after true answers. You're a childish fart, your own self. Why don't you ask an ASStronaut?

well, you wont' hear the sound for one because sound needs a medium to travel through and there is no air in space.
i don't think you'll smell it either because odour needs air and drafts of wind to blow it along.....
i guess your fart will just float away like a colourless cloud of gas!

Nothing, really. It would stay contained within your spacesuit; so in that regard I would caution AGAINST doing such a thing, unless you like the smell of your own fart being recirculated.
