Yes! When my first son was nursing, he ate so much that I lost 10 pounds beyond my pregnancy weight gain. I am thin to begin with, so losing 10 lbs made be look terrible. The doctor told me to put butter and cheese on everything, and to eat as much as possible.

You need 300 extra calories a day to make a baby during your pregnancy and 500 a day when you are breastfeeding. If eating more isn't possible you should at least add 2-3 Momsure bars to your diet. If you lose too much weight it will effect your milk, your teeth and bones. You will also become very susceptible to infections. You have to be just as careful with yourself when breast feeding as when you were pregnant.

Breast feeding should help the mother return to normal weight. It will also help a diabetic require less insulin. You do expend calories when breastfeeding. But loosing abnormal weight is just abnormal. First is the busy mother eating properly? If she is and is still losing I would check with my MD.

Hmmm well that is a hard question.
Generally speaking your milk supply would drop before your body truly starved, but the hormones of breastfeeding can cause a change in metabolism. A very high metabolism could cause someone to be underweight/loose weight rapidly even though they are getting enough nutrition and therefore still be healthy and make plenty of milk.

When you are breastfeeding you are supposed to be still eating for two but lots of fluids, so no you shouldn't loose an abnormal amount of weight, but you will get your normal shape back a lot quicker.

Not if she eats properly. It is said it may help her lose baby weight faster, but many don;t find this even to be true.
And it's 500 calories a DAY when baby is exclusively nursing. Once solids are introduced it is less.
