You would experience fear or hope.
If's can go in either direction. When the "if" is towards something positive we create the experience of hope. When the "if" is towards something negative we create the experience of fear.
What if are merely ways that we continue or enact a desire to think. The desire to think can be carried out in a variety of ways. Unfortunately, some people don't realize this and suffer while they think.

If is a very vauge word... in my opinion. Anything coukd happen. Don't you think? If the sky turned red, we might think the world is ending! It all depends on our minds... and the way we think.
