I have 3 Kidde smoke alarms, one for each floor. Every now and then one will give out one short, very loud, BEEP and do this once every approx. 30 secs for about a day. They are all wired up to the mains, so it couldn't be a low battery. One started last night, so I could hardly sleep. Does anyone know what's wrong?
Thanks, I'd really appreciate any sensible suggestions.

It WILL be a low battery, all mains detectors have standby batteries, either rechargeable or replaceable, usually PP3. Yours must be running down and needs to be replaced.

Modern household smoke alarms receive primary power from house AC power AND include a secondary standby battery. It's also possible that the smoke detecting element is out of calibration.
Check the owners' manual. If you don't have it you can sometimes download the owners manual from the manufacturer's web site.
If replacing the battery doesn't silence the trouble beep, replace the offending unit with a new one.

The real question is..
Do fires happen when there is no power?
Sometimes in the rare instances they do.. Like trees falling in a forest when no one is there to hear or see it..
All kidding aside.. I was stranded with the same problem after moving into a new condo.. I figured they are all connected with the rest of the building.. and powered via electoral connections.. but they are still powered by battery in the case of a power outage..
Change the battery with a new one.. should fix the problem..

even although it works of the mains electricity, just like your computer, when you switch both of them off there is an emergency battery inside them to keep them active ,like the clock on your computer, the battery in the alarm is to cover when the mains are switched off, when it runs low it will give out a warning beep to remind you to renew it ,the computer battery will do the same if computer is switched off long enough, these batteries normally recharge themselves when the power is restored ,it looks like your battery is completely exhausted and needs to be renewed

With any problems with smoke alarms, the first thing to do to try to fix it is by resetting it (just like your computer). You can do this by taking the smoke alarm from the wall and taking the batteries out. If the problem persists, I don't know where to go from there. But that's a good starting point.

smoke detectors let out a beep when the batteries are going low and need to be replaced... you should change the batteries every six months to be sure they are fully charged incase there happens to be a need for them to function in an emergency...
ones that are wired direct tend to collect dust and such and sometimes will go off without cause... in this case you should take the cover off and thoroughly clean it out.... if it still persists to go off it could be a wiring problem or the unit itself is wearing out or faulty
