Actually, this is common myth. The real story was that he was sympathetic to Hitler, and they needed a public excuse to kick him out of office that wouldn't disgrace the monarchy. Dig a little deeper and you'll find this out.

The British Empire should be eternally grateful to Wallis Simpson, because Edward VIII would not have made a good king. He lacked leadership qualities, and he was not a strong personality. This is clearlyl evidenced by the fact that he gave up the throne in the first place. There was no constitutional requirement that he do so. Henry VIII, for example, married a divorced woman. Anyone the king chooses can be queen-consort, and Wallis could have fulfillled that role if Edward had the balls to stand up to Parliament.
Now there is a fuss over whether William could marry a divorce and still be king. Of course he could. His father married a divorce and has never indicated that he plans to give up the throne.
So in my books, Edward did what was characteristic of him, and it didn't have anything to do with any great passion. Wallis led him around by the nose, and she would have been the Hilary to his Bill had he stayed on the throne.

He did England a great favor. His brother,George VI,was a very good king.I don't think that Edward VIII was really suited for the job;even his father, George V had qualms and said that he hoped that nothing got in the way of the throne,Bertie(George VI) and Lilibet(Elizabeth II).

I would have to say so, since a person who would be willing to abdicate the throne is not a very strong leader. His brother, George VI turned out to be a stronger leader who was a pretty decent King.

Of course Love is the most important thing. He’d probably have been miserable if he had chosen the throne.
