The one thing I tell everyone I talk to who wants to start a business is have a business plan. Meet with mentors from the SBA and have them help you with it. The business plan is critical, it helps you know exactly what you are doing and helps you make decisions.

I also recommend joining a group like toastmasters. It will help you by networking with others and really teach you how to speak and lead.

Reach out to others around you who own businesses. We have met with a few people who are wanting to start a business. There are so many questions and sometimes not solid answers. Find out how people overcome issues with hiring, supplies, finding a location, etc.

Finally read. Read every book you can get your hands on regarding accounting, buying a business, buying a franchise, taxes, laws, etc.

Make sure you have both the expertise in your field and more money that you could dream you needed.
If you don't have a business degree like accounting start taking classes. Every business needs to have records and even if you hire someone to help you need to know how to read them and train the replacement if they leave.
Work in a business like you want to own so you know what it is like.
Try to find a mentor with a similar business, it will be hard since they don't want competition but if you have a parent or someone in the industry they can be a major help.

see that you have infrastructure for the business. you get the supplies of stocks regularly and have finance to pay for the goods and have to see that that there is the market for the products of your business and you have the ability to compete with your fellow business so that you can survive.
