is this safe? I just bought four neon tetra's and as I was adding them to the tank my oranda just jumped and swallowed one. Now he is chasing the other three? Should I just remove the fish or wait and see if they will calm down. I also have a black moor and a baby red cap oranda and they don't seem to care but my other one is just going nuts.

Fish eat fish...feed you orandas some small gold fish every 2or 3 days they love a good snack...any fish you put in there thats smaller than them will be a goner...sorry...unless you put a seperater and half the tank...

Oranda eat neon tetra. I had two Oranda-s with 12 Neon tetras, two dwarf gouramis and two Zebra Danios. I a matter of weeks Neon tetras came down to 6. That is when I shifted the tetras to another tank.

By the by I see a lot of people cautioning about mixing Orandas with tropical fish. I would like them to note that fish do not have air-conditioners. I am keeping Orandas with dwarf Gouramis and they are both healthy and hearty. Fish will adapt (within certain limits) to the ambient you put them in.

Probably. The neons like different water chemistry and may not do well in the tank allowing the goldfish to eat them

if he is big enough, then its not abnormal. in the wild, fish will eat whatever they can to stay alive. its instinct for them.
however, neon tetras are tropical fish. goldfish are coldwater fish.
tropical fish need a temp of 77, and coldwater fish need a temp of 65. they cannot survive in any temperature besides their own.

big fish eat little fish. anything that is small enough to fit in the orandas mouth will be eaten.
they will not "calm down".

btw.. they shouldnt be in the same tank anyway one of the two will die depending on tank temperature.... oranda is a coldwater fish - tetras need tropical water (a heater).

That's not uncommon at all. Goldfish are omnivorous fish and will each pretty much any thing that will fit in their mouth. He will eventually catch and eat the others I would bet.

Please do not put tropical water fish in with cold water fish or vise verse as they require different temperatures and they are not compatible.
