I have a dilemma. I have a small sum of money. Enough to live out a short-term dream of living in Chile for a year. I just have always wanted to do that. Nothing is stopping me, except the thought that I could use that money and time to do something else (say get a Master's degree), and make much more money and time in the future. So the dilemma is this, do I use what I have to live out the only dream I have right now, or do I follow a path that I don't have my heart to have a more secure future?

Of course the decision is up to me, but I would like to hear your thoughts.

I couldn't really find a good category for this question, but I figured the philosophy crowd is pretty bright and thoughtful.

Do both.

Delay your trip to Chile. When you have increased your financial security you will be able to travel at a later date. It is now a goal to work towards.

Further, increase your options and study abroad -- including CHILE. If possible, live and study in Chile. Choosing a different Masters program will increase your ability to live long term in Chile.

Your Masters degree then becomes the tool to live your dream.

If you really want to go to Chile, that's up to you. Maybe I would do the same if I were in your place. But I would really go on to the degree path because that way you have an upper hand in where ever you're going plus you can get more money to live your dream! Who knows, you might grow to like doing whatever it is you're doing to get your master's. But like you said, it's your choice. I'm rooting for you either way.

Go to Chile. You will always regret it if you don't. Many people close to you will say you're foolish to squander the money. I say you're foolish to squander the opportunity to expand your horizons. I'm assuming you're American. I believe we have a tendency to get stuck in our attempts to attain the "American Dream" and forget that there's a whole big world out there that we can learn from.

Money alone will never make you happy. The strongest, happiest, most independent people I know are the ones who took chances and left behind the comfort of the familiar.

you should use that money to invest in something. $ comes and go so youll get that back if you do a business or some sort. like you said... you can get your masters degree... later on you can go to chile. It's not going anywhere. maybe instead of living there for a year.... you can get a house down there. also a good investment, plus you can have a house of ur own everytime you visit.

My vote is that you should 'live the dream'.Life is short and hard.If you have a dream that will provide you with pleasant memories for the rest of your life, then by all means....live the dream! There are other ways to finance a masters but DAMN few ways to fullfill dreams.........

Why not go to Chile and take college courses while you are there?
