I'm building a new PC desktop and I don't know which processor to go with. I'm trying to decide between the two following processors:

AMD Athlon™ 64 X2 Dual-Core 4000+

or

AMD Athlon™ 64 X2 Dual-Core 4400+

The price difference is $50 to upgrade to 4400+. Also, please give me a brief reason as to why I should go with your choice? Thanks a lot!

Somebody's lieing to you, the price difference between a 4000+ and a 4400+ is $15. If it was said verbally you probably misheard, if you read it online from where ever you're buying it from, they're ripping you off.

Now, for $15 you definatly should. You will notice the difference enough to justify a $15 difference, however $50 is enough for another Gig of RAM, which on Vista is going to matter much more.

What do you plan to do with the computer? General-purpose computing like e-mail and web browsing? Gaming? Running a CAD program?

In most cases, I'd opt for the 4000+ and put the $50 towards a better video card or an extra gigabyte of RAM. Those will have a much greater impact on system performance than the difference in Mhz, which is a slight boost.

Now for people rendering 3D models all day or running complex computations- stuff that takes their computer a long time to complete, I'd choose the faster CPU.

Rule of thumb in the computer business has been to buy the biggest, best with the most toys you can afford. The speeds your looking at is great.

Either one will make a speedy system. However it depends on how long you are going to keep the system and not want to upgrade. If not upgrading for a few years then the faster one makes more sense as it will keep up with the coming advances in software demands a little longer (especially true of the gaming world). The faster will handle multitasking a little better (again depends on programs) and what your doing with the system. Faster usually means things get done sooner.

Up to you but personally either one would be great. If the faster is affordable, go with it.

to be honest you really won't notice a difference from the 4000 to the 4400. It's just not much of a difference unless you have games that require it
