It's a great short story. Notice the names of some of the characters. Notice the foreshadowing that doesn't seem to mean anything until you've read the end. I really like the story.

One of the best short stories ever written. One of my co-workers reads it with her class and provides pretend "stones" (wadded up paper) and they actually hold a "lottery" at the end. The story really seems to resonate with high schoolers--they are especially sympathetic to "going along with the crowd" and enjoy questioning tradition for tradition's sake....

I'll recommend another short story, though not by Jackson. "Where are you going, where have you been." by Oates, I'm almost positive.

A great story, right up there with The The Rocking-Horse Winner by D. H. Lawrence.

very weird, if you ask me. I definitely did not expect the stones the boys were collecting to mean anything in the end!
