I assume your battery was tested. If so get your alternator tested as well and then you will know.

There is a third possibility and that is you might have a bad voltage sensor/regulator. This can be tested for as well if the alternator checks out to be OK.

It could be either, but most likely the alternator. The battery has sufficient power to start your engine, but not enough to keep it running. The Alternator adds extra current to the system to run all of the electrical items on your car. The battery alone can't. The electrical system will drain the battery dry in no time and leave you stranded.

The parts stores like Autozone, Napa, pep boys can test your electrical system for free. Mught wanna double check.

Good luck!

Your battery is not receiving a charge from the alternator. Replace the alternator before you ruin the battery.

The battery will run the car for a period of time, but if you have to run at night, with the lights on, then you will wind up getting stranded somewhere. You really need to do it now. Don't wait on this one. Good luck.

If the belt is still there and tight then it most likely it is the alternator.
the reason it started is the battery had time to build up enough juice to crank it.
The light stays on because the battery is not being charged by the alternator.

While your car is running disconnect the positive terminal wire on your battery. If your car shuts off then it is definately your alternator that is bad.

Change the alternator before it puts exessive drain on your new battery and you'll have to buy another one of those too.
