If you're spending several days in central Zurich, you could just walk around or take trams, but there's a lot to see within walking distance and you don't need a car.
You could rent a car for a day or two and drive all around the mountains, but if you want to mainly check out the cities like Luzern or Interlaken, you can take trains and rent bikes there too. I vote for a mixed bag, but don't rent a car for the whole time, it'd be a hassle in a crowded city.

Rail travel in Switzerland is wonderful and you don't need a pass if you're just going around Zurich.
