i don't get what happened, was it a dream or was it real? cuz he woke up and said it was a dream,then he goes back to the room,and at the end they could hear the daughter.can someone plz explain all this to me?

So I figured it out. the key was "burn me alive". It was a hidden message. Basically it meant burn me = alive cause both Mr.Eslin and the room get what they wanted. As he was burning the room the sprinklers went off in which Mr.Eslin yells "shut up, it wont work." Why? Because its alcohol and water cant put it out. So then you need, firefighters. So in exchange for saving the room, Eslin gets out however the firefighters might possibly be stuck in it. So Samuel L Jackson says "well done" because he finally got out alive. However, the ending shows that with the voice on his tape recorder of his daughter proves that paranormal things do exist that why his wife is so scared.

Cusack realizes, after the vision, that he was still in the room, and then he sees the daughter. When he REALLY gets out after the fire, the audience wonders if he if still dreaming and still stuck in the room and everything we see with his wife is some sort of vision.
Then, Cusack plays back the tape recorder with his daughter's voice, which was proof that it was not a dream. His daughter's ghost's voice was recorded, so it proved that everything he went through actually happened.

It was real! The fact he could play the tape and hear the daughter's voice on it means that he didn't imagine the whole thing and that something supernatural was happening! The wife could hear the voice on the tape so obviously it wasn't just in his head!

Why don't you read the short story in Stephen King's book called " Everything's Eventual" books and stories are always better than the movie.

It was all real.
He thought that he was dreaming from the surfing accident.
Then he realized that he was dreaming of that being a dream and then realized he was still in the room. So he dreamed that it did'nt happen while he was in the room.

well he was still trapped in the room until the fire and then at the end his daughters voice was on the tape to show everything he went through was real
