I don't know how much it is coming up with good ideas and pursuing good goals as it is simply chance whether or not you'll be a "great contributor." After all, most of the people who are improving society (though there are few) can hardly be noticed, because the only real people we remember and notice are the negative ones.
I'm not saying that by disappearing altogether you can be a "great contributor," but most of those who help out society aren't widely acknowledged unless they are martyred. Your life can be a successful story if you simply pursue your goals, and help others with theirs in the process.

I feel that we are on a one way path to destruction, from a multitudes of reasons. One of them being over population, another being lack education on the matter. The first step we need to take towards either birth control, with less death control. It is common knowledge that the population doubled in the past 50 years. Morbid as it be take religion out of the question, because sex will never go away, we need to abort children or use better form of contraceptives( sterilization set up like a lottery ) Or people can make it so they don't live as long, the isn't endless resources on this planet yet there is an endless stream of women in Africa have 6-8 children on average.1 Our great medical care in the world sounds like a good thing but it is keeping children alive that would of other wise died off so we are also keepindg diseases alive. I am sorry if yo have AIDS you must die right away. Why keep people like that alive so they spread the problem. Children born with AIDS do the right thing and abort the child, why would you give them life to go threough the same thing you go through.
I am sorry I got a rant.

The problem is deciding what is significant. If the influence of a thousand or a million people are needed to create another Mahatma Gandhi and I am one of those people was my contribution significant? Do I need to be an Abraham Lincoln or a Julius Caesar to make a significant contribution?
Everyone has a role to play in the world. Each of us has opportunities to influence others. Most instances of our influencing others are unknown to us. Very seldom do we ever know the results of our actions. One possible exception is in the lives of our children. Even in this case we probably will not be there at the end of their life to be able to know how their lives turn out. It is also true that it takes a community to raise a child and while usually important a parents impact is not always the deciding factor in how someone's life turns out.

your thinking falls in lock step with the "new Age" ideas of self help faith, based on the concept that we all have some p[urpose we are to try and figure out. this may make many feel good, but the truth is that you will find no one who knows what there purpose is, reason bieng, there is no one main purpose. Life changes continually, not only yours, but everyones. This thinking that is spreading, is nothing new, there is noting new under the san. It's once again , man thining somehow he is in control of his own Identiy, and purpose, aas ling as he figures out how to get to that point or insight. Sounds nice, but highly impracticle and is really self seving and self centered. We have no purpose, other than to fit the plans og God in heaven, Man hates this Idea, so we try and develope alternative lines of reasoning. god's will, will be done, and nothing YOu or I , or any Self help, and analyzing guru can do about it. Denying God doesn't do it either, he will use who he wants, when he wants, and how he wants. He is the potter, we are all but the clay. going on the line of NEw Age phyco analysis thinking that is permeating evengelical and athiest people, waht will you do if you find your purose, is to clean rest rooms in life, or to suffer through having your children die in a house fire, to show others how to endure hardships? It's not all wonderful careers, financial fredddom, and lolli-pops and rainbows. live is at best a mixed bag, of goood and bad, and we cannot honestly handle problems if we have our head in some quasi spiritual cloud of thnking we have a purose that is waiting to be revieled to us, God doesn not, and will not work like that.

You are only adding to the misery created by the culturally induced ideas you are regurgitating.
You were told by your culture that you must pursue some 'purpose' and this purpose can only be found outside of 'you'.
You want permanence and fear the end of the imagined 'you' which you have created. The extension of this is your facade that you have a 'concern' for your fellow man.
You cannot possibly have any care for anyone else other that what they can give you for your own survival. You are pretending to care and are trying to get someone else to act by using these ideas that you were given by your culture.
The ideas you are using have been used over and over again through out human history.
They are only an extension of your own fear that one day 'you' will come to an end.
Put down your megahorn and deal with your own fear.

You can continue in this path, but you will be unhappy. Until you achieve the goal of "great contributer" you life will feel less than what it is. You will not experience satisfaction, happiness or content. You may never accomplish your goal, meaning you many never feel good about yourself or your life. You have the ability to make that choice.
It seems to me that this is a very empty way to lead one's life.
If you must pursue this, I would encourage you to consider ending abuse and rights violations of children. It is only when children stop being abused that they will mature into people who do not think violence is a justifiable response.

Now you persons that have been pronounced in the Gospel, in the sunshine of heaven, yet have been careless or depraved, upward thrust up and obey the Gospel, and don't you be baptized except you repent, for all you hear of the Gospel and attend to, except you're as humble as somewhat baby, it won't do you any good, and undergo in innovations that it rather is by way of the call, and the atoning blood of Jesus Christ, which you've gotten remission of sins, by way of the ordinance of baptism which represents the burial. and those people who have not been pronounced interior this call and impression, I say, come and obey it and don't call yourselves outsiders and extraterrestrial beings, yet fellow heirs to the ensures made to Abraham, and that have been prevalent by potential of him and given to him for an enduring covenant.

Question your actions. Ask yourself am I doing this to gain for myself while hurting another? In other words do not use people as a means to an end. Rather you should focus on helping yourself while helping others.

When you understand that you are, like everyone else, just a normal human and the only thing that makes you extraordinary is when you get the opportunity to do so.
