Size is relative. If you put a full size van next to a mini-van, the minivan looks small. If you put the mini-van next to a Mini Cooper, it looks large.

The mini-van is smaller than a regular van. It has nothing to do with size relative to anything else!!

They are called mini vans because when they came out the were significantly smaller than the ones the big three were currently making. They were perfect for the soccer moms who needed space with seats to carry the kids or grocerys, yet were fairly economical and fairly attractive.
